Heading hierarchies

One of the most common ways in which digital content can be inaccessible to screen reader users and keyboard users is for section headings to not be properly formatted.

Headings are formatted in a hierarchy, with the most important heading at the top level, known as H1 or ‘heading level 1’.
The next level, or first sub-heading is H2 or ‘heading level 2’.

There are six heading levels, that decrease in importance from H1 all the way to H6.
